Condition Description

A condition description is an objective record of an object’s visible state. It may describe completeness, surface wear, damage, missing parts, or uncertainty.

Condition descriptions help readers understand what can and cannot be learned from an object record. They also help separate visible evidence from interpretation.

  • Look for descriptions of what is present and missing.
  • Separate condition from value or importance.
  • Avoid interpreting damage as a cause unless the record provides evidence.
  • Treat uncertainty as useful information.

Ask students to write a neutral condition description of an object image using only visible evidence.
