Catalog Numbering Structure

Catalog numbering structure describes how a public catalog number is built and read.

In Anatomy Steward, a number such as AS-OST-SKL-0001 may indicate project, collection area, object group, and sequence.

A clear numbering structure helps records remain organized, citable, and easier to browse.

It also helps visitors understand that a catalog number is a public record identifier, not necessarily a physical accession number.

A public catalog number may include:

  • AS — Anatomy Steward
  • a collection area code, such as OST for osteology
  • a group code, such as SKL for skull
  • a sequence number

Ask students to compare two catalog numbers and identify what information may be encoded in each part.

Public sources will be added as this entry is reviewed and expanded.

This entry explains public record identifiers. It does not establish physical ownership, accession status, acquisition history, or legal custody.
