Identifier Persistence

Identifier persistence is the principle that a catalog number or record identifier should remain unique and stable throughout the life of a record.

A persistent identifier allows a record to be cited, updated, linked, and tracked over time. If identifiers change casually, citations break and records become difficult to trust.

  • Look for a stable catalog number or digital record ID.
  • Check whether old identifiers are preserved as references.
  • Avoid reusing identifiers for unrelated records.

Show students two records: one with a stable identifier and one with a changed or missing identifier. Ask which one is easier to cite and revisit.
