Section titled “Definition”Identifier persistence is the principle that a catalog number or record identifier should remain unique and stable throughout the life of a record.
Why It Matters
Section titled “Why It Matters”A persistent identifier allows a record to be cited, updated, linked, and tracked over time. If identifiers change casually, citations break and records become difficult to trust.
How to Read It
Section titled “How to Read It”- Look for a stable catalog number or digital record ID.
- Check whether old identifiers are preserved as references.
- Avoid reusing identifiers for unrelated records.
Teaching Use
Section titled “Teaching Use”Show students two records: one with a stable identifier and one with a changed or missing identifier. Ask which one is easier to cite and revisit.
