Section titled “Definition”An uncertainty flag is a record marker used to identify information that has not yet been confirmed. It may apply to source, date, rights, taxonomy, measurements, provenance, or interpretation.
Why It Matters
Section titled “Why It Matters”Uncertainty flags build trust by showing what is known and what remains provisional. They help prevent uncertain information from being presented as fact.
How to Read It
Section titled “How to Read It”- Look for words such as possible, probable, unverified, unknown, or pending review.
- Ask which field the uncertainty applies to.
- Do not treat flagged information as final.
- Check whether the record explains what evidence is missing.
Teaching Use
Section titled “Teaching Use”Ask students to mark uncertain claims in a sample object record. Then ask how the wording should change.
