Object Type

Object type identifies what kind of object, representation, or record is being described.

Examples may include skull, dentition set, digital model, preservation container, diagram, teaching model, or object record.

Object type helps visitors understand what they are looking at before interpreting meaning or function.

Ask:

  • Is this a physical object, digital surrogate, illustration, model, or record?
  • Is the object type specific enough to support comparison?
  • Does the object type match the source type and holding status?

Ask students to identify object type before making any functional interpretation.
